It’s been that way since the day Bill Combs set out to build the finest, fastest, best performing speed boat at his factory in Bucyrus, Ohio in 1963. Bill originally began feeding his racing obsession by modifying boats. Once he realized that it made more sense to design and build his own racing outboard, Checkmate was born. Bill and his sons hit the racing circuit in the late 60’s - early 70’s with their high-performance speed boats in tow.
